Walk for Water

Back in April, (Yes, I am very behind on this post!) our children's ministry "left the church building" on this particular Sunday to "go and be" the church by Walking for Water to raise money to expand/build a water well system at the Hosetta School for Special Needs Children in Sierra Leone, Africa.  The goal was for the children and families participating to raise $5,000.  We raised $5,000, folks.  In fact, the grand total was OVER $19,000!  Praise God!  Isn't that incredible?  It was so cool for my kids to see that they could make a difference in another child's life.
The Brown and Boring Big Kids
The Littles
The kids walked about a mile down to Town Lake and filled their buckets with dirty water.  Along the way, there were signs and pictures posted with facts about the children in Africa getting sick and dying from the dirty water they drink.  Such a good reminder to these six kids that we are blessed beyond measure and it is our job as Christians to take care of problems like this.  To whom much has been given, MUCH is expected!
Filling the buckets
Here they are on their way back to the church.  I won't lie.  There was a brief moment of, "Mom, these buckets are heavy!" and "I'm tired!" and even "Eeewww!  The yucky water is splashing on my clothes!"  It was the perfect opportunity to talk about how the kids in Sierra Leone must feel having to drink/carry/wash with/bathe with, etc. this yucky water every day.  I can promise you that dirty water splashing on their clothes is the least of their worries!
When we got back, we filled a huge trough with the dirty water.  I love Reagan's face in this picture.  I think she realized then what this was all about!
Even Payton filled a bucket and emptied it into the trough!
It was such a great morning!  After it was over, the kids enjoyed time just playing in the field.

I love our church and I love how "missions minded" we are.  I need to do a better job of making my children more aware of the blessings we have and how it is our job to use those to further the kingdom of God.  I want to do a better job of teaching them that what we have is not ours.  Wether it be in Sierra Leone, Africa or right here in Allen, Texas, they can make a difference in other kids' lives!

wow such a neat fundraiser and so hands on! a true world view perspective is rare in the bible belt. so awesome you can expose your kids to that and that the "Body" at FBC is doing so much locally and globally!
